Moonlight Beach by Yurie Kiri

Moonlight Beach by Yurie Kiri

Chick lit Café Awards First Place to Moonlight Beach: Murder and Magic by Yurie Kiri for best Paranormal Thriller, Crime & Mystery

Moonlight Beach by Yurie Kiri examines the bizarre and outlandish murders, and gruesome crimes being committed at the charming beach town of Rancho, California. It is filled with mystery, witchcraft, paranormal activity, mystical mayhem, and dark magic. This is the perfect novel for fans of these genres. One of the very best I have ever read. It is completely original with unique characters and an incredible, engrossing and gripping plot and storyline.

Body parts are washing up on the beach and the detective is trying figure out who is committing these crimes and what exactly is going on. Then there is also a group of friends using certain drugs and conjuring up spirits. When the group performs the rite on a full moon, their combined strength gives them more power than they originally intended and they cause the spirit of a powerful witch from long ago, called Katomi, to get trapped inside one of the friends’ bodies. This is just one of the various evil occurrences going on in the wealthy community. Only the friends shared strength can protect Katomi from “Roy,” who is an ancient shaman who has been attempting to trap Katomi’s spirit inside dying bodies while he rapes and mutilates each one. Katomi’s spirit can only be released from her host’s body if Roy or the host is killed, but her presence allows the four women to have power over other’s minds which they wield to protect themselves and their coven. In an action-packed plot sequence, as the women attempt to dodge Roy at all costs, another nefarious deal is unraveling. Ike Bracken, a multi-millionaire needs a liver for his young son. His son’s condition can only be improved with a transplant, but the wait is too long. Luckily, Roy is good at murder—murder is what feeds his power—and he’s equally equipped to harvest organs. Especially for cash. As events come to a head, readers will be flying through page after page to see if the women can survive an ancient madman.

Guardian of Monsters (Sleuths of Shadow Salon book 1) by Catherine Stine

Discounted to $0.99 for the spooky season!
Celestine, witch and wolf shifter has a talent for prophetic drawings. She’s shocked when she draws her landlord Ray with his eyes gouged out and a strange winged-mermaid leaning over him. Later she finds an eyeless Ray dead on the sidewalk. All she wanted to do was open a gallery, but first she must apprehend his killer. In a note she found after he died, Ray revealed he wasn’t just a leather-smith but a supernatural pirate mage. Years back, his Jekyll crew trapped the evil Demon Three Eyes clan. Ray had feared they’d escaped, were stalking him, and would soon wreak havoc on Savannah.

Oryn, a fellow student in Celestine’s continuing ed art class, is a fae and a thorn in her side, when he asks nosy questions about the case. Yet, she’s drawn to him when he’s her masseur at the spa she frequents, and he’s clever at brainstorming leads regarding Ray’s case. He insists his air magic could come in handy.

When pirates in Ray’s old crew are murdered, their body parts stolen, Celestine puts more horrifying clues together. She’ll need everyone on board, including Oryn and Luna, a mermaid asking to show her sea-glass sculptures at Celestine’s new gallery—the very same mermaid in Celestine’s tragic drawing of Ray. Otherwise, the lethal monstrosity Demon Three Eyes is unleashing on Savannah will destroy the city and everyone in it. Perfect for fans of Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris and paranormal police procedurals.

Termination Shock: A Novel by Neal Stephenson

Neal Stephenson’s sweeping, prescient new novel transports readers to a near-future world in which the greenhouse effect has inexorably resulted in a whirling-dervish troposphere of superstorms, rising sea levels, global flooding, merciless heat waves, and virulent, deadly pandemics.

One man – visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D. – has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? And just as important, what are the consequences for the planet and all of humanity should it be applied?

Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming. Ultimately, it asks the question: Might the cure be worse than the disease?

Epic in scope while heartbreakingly human in perspective, Termination Shock sounds a clarion alarm, ponders potential solutions and dire risks, and wraps it all together in an exhilarating, witty, mind-expanding speculative adventure.
